Elderly: Alf!!
Alf The Helper:  Ratonhnhaké:ton

Also known as Connor Kenway, principal character in the any day now (30/31 October) fifth instalment of the Assassin's Creed series by Ubisoft.  Please forgive Alf, who decided that a temporary loss of imagination was no reason to give up wallpaper painting, resorting to design concepts for The Walking Dead and Modern Warfare 3.

Alf the Helper: sorry! :(

Greetings dear webternet traveller, once again I've set out on my pilgrimage and brought back some essential game wallpaper for you.  In my eternal search for the best, the cheapest and the almost forgotten gems of gaming legend, it appears, that unless there's a series or a franchise, six years can render a game website redundant.  Sniff!

What is Text Twist? Free Online Flash Games

Text Twist

One of the delights of getting older is the opportunity it affords you to regress.  Not content with taking on the latest state of the art console games, a quick tour through the latest free online flash games, brought me to a little gem called Text Twist.

Simple enough, you start out with six letters and must rearrange them to form as many words as you can.  Using your keyboard and or you mouse you simply select the 3, 4, 5 or oh my goodness... 6 letters you feel you can form into a recognisable word. Succeed in findng a word and it's slotted over the left side of the screen for you to chuckle at.

The object of each level is to find the 6 letter word, allowing you passage to the next level.  Oh and there's a timer, forgot that bit, important too as completing the six letter word within the time limit affords you a bonus score.  In case your still awake, the "Twist" part of "Text Twist", is the ability to Twist or rearrange the letters to help you better complete your objective.

The link I'm using is to the MSN site, though other versions exist, the msn site offers a mobile version...... erm... for mobiles and a "deluxe" downloadabubble version.  At my last visit there were 2,047 people playing, seems I'm not the only one who enjoys a few minutes brain massage.

Right...back to Darksiders.

Thank you for listening :)

Persona 4 Arena Review Summary and Wallpaper

Persona 4: Arena Ps3 Box Art

Persona 4 Arena Wallpaper
Wallpaper 1600x900

For Xbox 360 and Ps3, Persona 4: Arena is a narrative heavy, 2D fighting game follow up to the cult hit JRPG series, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona by Atlus.  The game was released in the US on August 7th and a release in the EU.. when they get round to it.. is set for September 7th.

The Plot
Featuring characters from Persona 3 and Persona 4, the game focuses on a fighting tournament that takes place in an alternative reality, best described as the TV World.  In Arena, Players are able to  follow individual characters through story mode, or take the game online to wreak havoc with your fighting skills.

Reception
Famitsu, the best selling Japanese gaming magazine, with four separate reviewers, gave the game a score of 36/40 90%.  Whilst Metacritic gave the Ps3 version a resounding 86% and the xbox 360 84%.

Trivia
The game has earned itself the rather embarassing accolade of being the first region locked game on PlayStation 3.  The reason, according to those that know, is to prevent re-importation. Huh!? the game includes both a Japanese and an Engish audio and apparently Japanese players would have been able to import the Us version at a far lower price than sold in Japan.

Quote of the bunch:
"It weaves the majesty and imagination of one of the best role playing franchises of all-time into the snarling bravado of a one-on-one brawler so effortlessly, one wonders why it's never been done so well until now. -IGN

Reviews Summary
A fantastically realized fighting game
Easily stand out even in the crowded fighting game segment.
Approachable, deep gameplay, staggeringly beautiful.
If you're a JRPG or fighter fanatic with even a hint of interest in the other genre, P4A is an absolute must-buy.
It has a robust story, an interesting system, a magnificent roster, and wonderful music
An elaborate yet engrossing fighter that packs a ton of content suffers from a few design choices.
Mastering the mechanics of this engine involves a lot of time and effort in the training room.
These are fighters you can care about, and this is a fighting game everyone should play.

Hunger Games on DVD and Blu Ray

From the  novel by American television writer and novelist Suzanne Collins comes the film adaptation, directed by Gary Ross and co-written and co-produced by Collins herself, on DVD and Blu Ray from August 18th and EU September 3, 2012.

The Hunger Games are a televised battle to the death, held every year in what was once North America.  If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss Everdeen, portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence, must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Trivia:
On the selection of Jennifer Lawrence's for the starring role, Suzanne Collins said, she is "only one who truly captured the character I wrote in the book".
Despite it's PG13 rating, Hunger Games has been "delayed indefinitely" perhaps forever in Vietnam.  The film's violent scenes cited as the reason.
A sequel based on the second novel and titled "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is set to commence filming in a few weeks.

Darksiders 2 Trailer, Arena mode and Popcorn

You as Death

Darksiders 2 Trailer

Arena Mode Trailer

Released Dates: 14th August in US and the 21st in Eu.
for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows and a launch tile late 2012 for Wii U.

Darksiders II is an action adventure game carrying on from it's extraordinarily well received predecessor (83% on Metacritic). Events are set in the same time period as before, a "parallel sequel" I'm told,  but this time out you take control of the Horseman Death, instead of his brother War.

As Death you set out on a personal mission to find proof of your brother's innocence, enlisting the help of powerful beings from the Nether Realm as you saunter across city maps and dungeons that are collectively double the size of the original.

Finished the game, no problem! a new Arena Mode called the "Crucible" allows you to develop Death even further, with up to 100 levels of progressively more difficult enemies awaiting you with each wave. Not satisfied with that then a  "New Game+" allows Death to retain all his items and skills and set about a replay with more difficult enemies and challenges.

Double the bang for your buck!?

Eldery: Okay Alf you can turn off the capital Letter thingy...
Elderly: Alf!!!!!
Alf The Helper: erm.. remember the last time I burnt the popcorn?
Elderly: Yes
Alf The Helper: gulp!... well.... we're experiencing a parallel sequel....

Bargain Bin: Devil May Cry 4

Devil May Cry 4 Box Art
Back to the bargain bin again before pay day and this time it's a frustratingly difficult classic released for Ps3, xbox 360 and Windows on Feb 2008.  If you've no intention of ever purchasing it, you might amuse yourself by looking for a signed collector's edition, see "trivia" section below.

Devil May Cry 4 is a hack and slash beat 'em up, with the player controling both the game's protagonist Nero and the series' main character Dante, as they take on a veritable legion of demons.  The series is renowned for it's high level of difficulty and DMC 4 is no different.

Receiving resoundingly favourable reviews the game Scored 84% from 61 critic reviews on Metacritic.  Criticism was levelled at the industrial hard rock soundtrack, a frugal approach to level design and a "screwy" camera.

Quote of the Bunch
"It's polished and slick, it's got gargantuan-sized gods, near-musical interludes, and infernal, flaming bosses. It's nothing short of brilliant." IGN Uk

Reviews Summary:
DMC4 returns showcasing how action games should be made.
A stunning triumph of an action game, the gameplay is sparkling with life,
Riddled with too many flaws to really enjoy completely
Replay value, self-improvement and the challenge of later stages make DMC4 a classic
Capcom has passed up the opportunity to do something new and exciting.
A tragic amount of recycling here, it does nothing new, but damn, if it isn't fun to play.
This game is rock solid with some of the most spectacular and fast paced gameplay.
You'll be hard-pressed to find a better-feeling, better-looking, jack-of-all-trades action game

Devil May Cry 4 collector's editions signed

Trivia
Some 200 copies of the metal box, collector's edition  (100 per console version) were signed in silver marker by the game's producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, on the back of the metal tin on Dante's left shoulder (see image above).

For  those that have spent sleepless nights pondering the award system's letter allocation, the following will help you sleep easier.

D for Deadly
C for Carnage
B for Brutal
A for Atomic
S for Smokin'
SS for Smokin' Style
SSS for "Smokin' Sick Style

Deadlight Review Summary

Released for xbox live arcade on August 1st 2012, Deadlight is a 2d sidescrolling survival horror cinematic platformer for Xbox Live Arcade developed by Tequila Works.

(..takes deep breath...)

Plot:
Virus outbreak reanimates the dead, decimation of society, Randall Wayne (you) searches for his family.  Walking Dead meets Limbo.

Postive critic reviews focussed on the horrific and compelling storyline and challenging puzzle game play.  Negatives include issues around game controls, brevity and voice acting.  Opinion is polarised as to the game environment, impressive vs. bland and the plot, compelling vs pointless.  The game managed to score a decidely average 69% from 52 critic reviews on Metacritic.

My 2 cents
In fairness to the developers, I've only managed to invest an hour in the game since launch day, which probably says more about the game than I'd like to admit.  I found the voice over script contrived, the game athmosphere failing to impress and then there is that overly familiar nod to the walking dead, the "shadows" responding to loud noises...please!!.

Alf The Helper: Yeah I noticed that too, they could have mixed it up, like the zombies responding to smell!
Elderly: Smell?
Alf The Helper: Yeah, like the zombies can pick up your smell if you've been sweating and stuff.
Elderly: What?
Alf The Helper: Yeah, like you've got to shower and brush your teeth, find cans of Lynx to put the Zombies of your trail..
Elderly: 8( .....oh sweet divine!!....where was I?

.....getting pummelled by "shadows" before I knew how to fight back, didn't help either.  I do however intend to return and finish the game, at which stage I'll update this little section...  without Alf!

Quote of the Bunch:
Deadlight draws you in with its rich, pervasive atmosphere, but doesn't give you much to do once you're there. -Gamespot

Reviews Summary:
The quality of content is amazing, psychotic storyline with fluid gameplay.
The full product is a disappointment to say the absolute least.
Probably the best downloadable title on the market right now.
Weirdly inconsistent 2D survival horror.
A breathtaking adventure, though the main campaign lasts only five or six hours.
It's as mindless as the zombies it features.
All the style, substance, and gameplay you could want, with none of the originality you need
Without satisfying mechanics or narrative, there's nothing pushing you forward towards Deadlight's conclusion.
An incredibly slight experience, a single play-through comes in at under two hours.
Ruined by the lacking storyline and extremely short campaign.
