E3 downsized, no dead .....no downsized!

Earlier reports on a downsizing of the annual games industry event, were dramatically squashed by an article on next-gen.biz , which suggested the show was dead and buried. However it took ars technica, to make a few phone calls and definitively post the final result, that the annual trade show will be downsized.

The cost of the event to exhibitors, including the demands on companies to assign large numbers of staff to focus on the show, expenses associated with travel to the show, and the added expense to polish game builds and demos to be shown to attendees, have all it appears contributed in part to the shows demise.

Fully Story from Ars technica

From what little i've read, im getting a distinct impression that outside the game executives and the media, the rabble are no longer required, which is a pity as i clean up rather well. And while your at it, spare a thought for e3girls.com

Oneechanbara X - The Devil Evolution Human

Due Japan 4th Quarter 2006 for Xbox360, likelihood of a Western release, slim. A reincarnation of a ps2 title called Zombie Zone. Devil Evolution sees the principle character, dressed in a bikini and ten gallon hat, slash her way through hordes of rotting Zombies with her trusty samurai. Of course there is an adequately good reason for such an implausible combination, and methinks more likely rooted in the 360's poor Japanese sales, than the game plot.

Army of Two First Look

Available for Ps3 and Xbox360 sometime in 2007, from EA's new Montreal studio. The game is set in the near future, where you take control of, as the name suggests, a two-man mercenary team doing high-risk paramilitary operations. The game is a third-person shooter allowing you to either play through the campaign with a friend, or issue orders to an intelligent computer-controlled teammate who may or may not obey the orders you give him.

Billed as the first game ever to put players inside tactical warfare involving Private Military Corporations. Reid Schneider, Senior Producer at EA Montreal noted, "This is the game we've always wanted to create. Until now, the hardware would not allow us to deliver truly intelligent AI characters."

Price Check: Commodore 64

The Commodore 64 personal computer, released in August 1982, became the best selling (17 million units) single computer model of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The Commodore 64 is commonly referred to as the C64; other less common names include CBM 64/CBM64, C= 64.

Introduced by Commodore Business Machines in August 1982 at the low price of US$595, it offered 64 kilobytes of RAM with sound and graphics performance that compared favourably with later IBM compatible computers of that time.

Unlike computers that were distributed only through authorized dealers, Commodore took the lead and also targeted department stores and toy stores and unlike computers the unit could be plugged directly into a television set to play games. A quick google search will uncover a wealth of emulator sites and programs, allowing you to experience the gameplay from the comfort of your own desktop.

To enjoy the whole hands on brown keypad experience for yourself, you can pick up a good deal on ebay from anything between $30 to $75, or you have the option of visiting a decent retro site like retrotrader. Original games (we hope) are going at anything from between $3 and $7, and if you look really really hard this seller on ebay is offering an complete light fantastic package for just $73, including 3d glasses light gun and original games. And remember be cautious out there, you could end up with a retro piece of plastic unless you look for some guarantees.

Elsewhere a c64 fridge magnet will set you back $6, unique joysticks with 30 programmed c64 games will cost you from $10 to $25. If you want to read more about the troubled history of the c64, On the edge the rise and fall of the C64 will cost $30, while a commodore logo tshirt on 8ball will set you back $20.

Jean Grey

Prompted by comments by the illustrious Gnome and GamerC on a earlier post previewing Marvel Ultimate Alliance, I've taken the liberty of previewing a couple of the promised 140 characters from the games teaser website and so what better way to start than with Jean Grey. Her videogame pedigree is in no doubt

Jean Grey appears as "Marvel Girl", a playable character in 1990's X-Men II: The Fall of the Mutants for the PC. Jean is a supporting character in X-Men for the Sega Genesis.

She appears as "Phoenix" in her blue-and-gold uniform in X-Men: Gamemaster's Legacy for the Sega Game Gear.

Jean also appears as "Phoenix" in the X-Men: Mutant Academy games for the Sony PlayStation and as "Phoenix" and the powerful "Dark Phoenix" in X-Men: Next Dimension for the PS2, Xbox and the Nintendo Gamecube.

She appears as "Ultimate Jean Grey" (a playable character) in X-Men Legends and its sequel X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, where also she appears as the powerful "Dark Phoenix" an exclusive for the PSP.

Abominable Snowman Interactive DVD game/movie

Benjamin, Crista and Marco North go on an adventure to the Himalayas to find their Uncle Rudy who has gone missing in his quest to find a mythical Yeti creature. At every crossroads a decision has to be made. Will they survive avalanches, keep away from evil poachers, and escape hungry tigers?

Okay so the concept is not new, but the opportunity for little varmints/children to interact with their very own movie adventure should keep the pests/darlings really really happy for the 80 minute runtime. And you know what those tiny monsters are like, they'll want to watch the whole thing all over again ad infinitum. Finally a way to keep those small humans away from your favourite games console.

The Abominable Snowman is the first in an exciting series of interactive DVDs based on the best-selling book series of the same name. This groundbreaking interactive DVD features 11 exciting stories in one DVD movie, and the celebrity voices of
William H. Macy (Seabiscuit, Fargo),
Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle, Agent Cody Banks),
Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives, TransAmerica),
Lacey Chabert (Party of Five, Mean Girls), and Daryl Sabara (Spy Kids, Polar Express).

(i've just been asked to point out that children can sometimes be adorable............ okay you can undo the thumbscrews now!)
