How to remove the Xbox360 faceplate

Not as simple as it appears, the following approaches, while different should result in the same outcome. Least we hope so. It is generally accepted that removing your faceplate is an unnerving experience.

Foreword:
Read the instructions twice before proceeding, it's amazing how easy it is to miss something the first time out. The following information has been gleaned from a number of sites on the net. I have simply compiled the best instructions in one walkthrough.
Preparation:
  1. Close the disc tray, remove all memory units, and then turn off your Xbox 360 console.
  2. Ensure you have removed any game disc before proceeding. Yep it'll probably get scratched so don't risk it.
  3. You should ensure that your console is secure and if the unexpected happens (yep it falls out of your grip) it isn't going to end up in a million pieces (well 1,700 odd) on the floor. Do not risk it!.
  4. A clean work surface like the floor will mean it'll have no place to fall. Remember if your luck is anything like mine do not work on a slippy surface or a height where your console has an an option to commit suicide.
The fun bit:
Background:
With the console lying flat as in the image above, it's important to note there are four hidden tabs underneath the faceplate, two on the left and two on the right.

Four options

  1. Locate the slot on the right side of the faceplate assuming your console is lying flat as above and pull on it until it detaches. The Microsoft method.
  2. Okay not clear enough, second option insert your thumb into the door that covers the two USB ports on the right side of the faceplate and with your other hand squeeze the top and bottom of the faceplate and simply pull off the faceplate with your thumb.
  3. Third option Squeeze the right and left ends of the face plate and pull forward gently. It helps to place your thumb inside the USB compartment. The face plate should come lose with minimal force.
  4. Okay you want pictures, full credit to gameinformer, if you don't get it after viewing the picture, and reading his "coin" option then do not proceed, get someone else who has had experience to help you . Warning it is possible to "snap" your faceplate.
note: Avoid pulling on the faceplate's memory-unit doors when the faceplate is detached from the console, as the doors can become separated from the faceplate. The power button stays with the faceplate, when replacing your faceplate note that a plunger must make contact with the Xbox 360’s body in order to turn the unit on.

Okay you can have your heart attack now!

Put one hand on top of the console to steady it.

Then in the USB port, curl a finger behind one of the rounded bits of the hole and pull the faceplate out.

Thanks a lot! I'm a young gamer (19 presently) but I love this website for the detailed information and resources as well as the clever writing, and this page in particular helped me a great deal in applying my Halo 3 Covenant faceplate & skin set to my 360. =D

thats obnoxiously hard to pull off. on my first xbox (before i got the 3 lights) the usb door broke when it came off. now i gotta send it in again, because i got the three red lights AGAIN.

Used a 5 eurocent and it worked like a charm, without it I might have broken it :P
